"It took five days for sanctions against Putin and his thugs, but imposing sanctions for 70 years of oppression of the Palestinians 'would not be helpful'." - Richard Boyd Barrett MP
Not so long ago, envisioning celebrities and brands like Kylie Jenner, Gucci, and Chanel abandoning their archetypal neutrality in support of refugees would be an inconceivable reality. The West has notably retained its silence upon the acts of atrocities faced by the Palestinians, Uyghurs, Syrians, Yemenis and countless others, and yet a highly spirited public stance on Ukraine has unveiled a systemic hypocrisy indicating a position of solidarity to not in fact be a controversial choice. The upholding of modern day imperialism exists in that whilst empathy extends to those in proximity to "Whiteness", the West continues down a dehumanising trajectory of blatant disregard for people of colour, profiting from their culture and "aesthetic".
Connotations of a "typical refugee".
The term refugee is by no means associated with the region of the world you inhabit, the colour of your skin, nor the religion in which you choose to practice. Rather, it is someone who has a well-founded fear of persecution; a direct result of an event inflicted upon an innocent who may have had to flee from war, violence, and displacement.
The media during this period of Ukrainian coverage has exposed an alarmingly causal underlying sentiment of racism, with assumptions that refugees are synonymous with being a person of colour. Ironically the countries that "lack civility" in the eyes of the Western world are struggling and have dealt with war due to the military intervention, occupation, oppression and genocide funded by these more "superior", "civil" nations.
The hypocrisy of the international community.
As passionate talks ensue of the illegal occupation of Ukraine and the occupied peoples' right to armed resistance, Palestinians have been slapped in the face with realisation of the duplicity of the global community at large. Never before have these arguments been taken seriously in the defence of the Palestinian people and their decades-long struggle for liberation.
Contrary to previous declaration, nations shockingly do in fact hold the capacity to take action when a peoples' land is invaded, and sanctions can be used swiftly and efficiently against such aggressors. When a young Ukrainian boy launches Molotovs at Russian soldiers and goes to whatever lengths in order to protect his land from occupation, he is a hero, and rightly so. And yet when a Palestinian boy throws pebbles at an Israeli soldier, he is nothing more than a terrorist in training.
“They steal your bread, then give you a crumb of it… Then they demand you to thank them for their generosity… O their audacity!”
